How Licensure Portability Opens Doors in 2026

Planning to move to another state in 2026 but worried that your healthcare license will not transfer? You are not alone. Many nursing professionals delay relocation because they assume their credentials will not be valid in a new state.

Licensure compacts can help. These agreements let you practice in multiple states with one license. Here is how licensure portability works and how you can use it to your advantage.

Why Moving Nursing Jobs Between States Is Often a Challenge

One of the biggest hurdles healthcare professionals face when relocating is that each state sets its own licensure rules. A license obtained in one state is not automatically valid in another, even if you move just across the border.

What should be a simple move can quickly become a complicated administrative process. You may have to reapply, resubmit documents, complete background checks, pay fees, and wait weeks or months for approval.

For many RNs, NPs, PTs, and other therapists, this barrier discourages relocation altogether. It can derail career plans, disrupt family moves, and slow down transitions into federal or military healthcare roles. Some professionals even lose opportunities because of licensing delays.

Fortunately, licensure portability offers a clearer, faster path forward.

The Nurse Licensure Compact Makes Mobility Real

At the center of licensure portability is the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). This agreement allows nurses in participating states to hold one multistate license that is valid across all compact states.

If you live in a compact state and meet the uniform licensure requirements, you may be eligible. Here is how it works:

  • You apply once through your home state’s Board of Nursing.
  • New graduates can apply when taking the nursing exam. Licensed nurses can apply when relocating.
  • Renewals follow the same process through the home state.
  • Some internationally educated nurses may also qualify.
  • Once approved, you can work in any compact state without additional licensing steps.

The result is meaningful flexibility. For nurses who travel, move frequently, or pursue federal and military-facility roles, compact licensure makes mobility both practical and efficient.

Good News: The Nurse Licensure Compact Has Expanded

The NLC continues to grow. As of 2025, the Compact covers 43 total jurisdictions, including 41 U.S. states and 2 territories. One of the newest additions is Massachusetts, which joined in November 2024.1

A few states are still reviewing legislation, while others such as Minnesota, Nevada, New York, and Oregon do not have plans to join at this time. Even so, the overall trend shows broad nationwide expansion.

Best Opportunities to Target with the Nurse Licensure Compact

Licensure portability opens more than just geographical flexibility. It also expands the types of roles available. Here are three strong opportunities to consider:

1. Military and Federal Healthcare Facilities

Compact licensure is especially valuable for nurses seeking roles at military hospitals, clinics, and VA centers. With one license, you can accept assignments across multiple bases as needs arise.

2. Travel Nursing and Contract Roles

For nurses who enjoy variety or want to explore different regions, a compact license removes the licensing barriers often associated with travel assignments. You stay compliant and ready to move quickly when opportunities open.

3. Long-Term Relocation

For professionals relocating due to family needs, a spouse’s job, or personal preference, a multistate license prevents career interruptions. You stay active in the workforce and avoid delays associated with re-licensing.

Why You Need Expert Help to Leverage the Compact

Even though the NLC has existed for years, many nurses still find the process confusing. As one nurse posted online four years ago, “Compact licensure is supposed to be easy, but I am confused.” Another shared just two months ago, “I am trying to sort my licensing so I can start working ASAP, but I am really confused about compact licensing.”

Clear guidance makes a significant difference. Experts can help you:

  • Understand eligibility and requirements.
  • Navigate federal and military healthcare standards.
  • Match your credentials with high-demand facilities.
  • Time your application to accelerate hiring.
  • Avoid delays from incomplete or incorrect documentation.

Agencies specializing in federal healthcare staffing understand the credentialing process across multiple states and can prevent costly mistakes.
