For some healthcare providers, the decision to enter the field is driven by a desire to help others. For Kassi Wright, that calling began much earlier: around family dinner tables filled with stories of service to the nation.
Growing up, military service was never just a concept to Kassi. It was part of her family’s story. From her grandfather’s time in the Korean War to her siblings’ deployments in modern conflicts, the values of duty, pride, and commitment shaped the way she saw the world.
Kassi served as a nurse practitioner with Matrix Providers, caring for Veterans. In her own way, she carried on that family tradition by looking after those who once wore the uniform and making sure their stories and sacrifices were never forgotten.
A Family That Serves: Where Kassi’s Mission Began
For Kassi, military service had always been part of her world. She grew up watching family member after family member answer the call to serve.
- It started with her grandfather, whom she affectionately calls her “papa,” who served in the Army during the Korean War.
- Her father followed a different path but the same calling, serving in the Navy.
- Later, her sister joined the Marines and deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq in the years following 9/11.
- Today, the tradition continues with her brother, who currently serves in the Army and has also completed a deployment to Iraq.
“The reason I became a nurse practitioner…is because I had come from a very long family history of people who served in the military,” Kassi narrates decisively.
Growing up surrounded by these examples left a lasting impression on Kassi. While she chose a career in healthcare instead of military service, she always felt a strong desire to give back to those who had served.
Becoming a nurse practitioner working with Veterans became her way of honoring that legacy.
“It’s just my way of giving back to them,” she explains. “Giving back to other Veterans who have served our country.”
Finding Purpose in Healthcare That Looks a Little Different
For many healthcare professionals, the clinical side of medicine becomes the main focus: diagnosing conditions and treating symptoms.
Kassi took a different approach to Veteran care.
Medical evaluations were an important part of her role, but she believed some of the most meaningful moments happened during conversations, when Veterans got the chance to share their experiences.
“This job gives me a sense of purpose,” she says. “I love being able to come to work and listen to my Veterans and let them tell me not just about, you know, their knee injury that they had happened in the military, but just their stories and the experiences they got to have.”
Because of her willingness to go beyond the clinical side of care, the people around her took notice. “Kassi is one of the best practitioners we have. She is always willing to go the extra length to help Veterans.” said a market manager at the facility where she supported Veterans.
“If there was only one outstanding practitioner to nominate for a raise,” the market manager added, “it would be Kassi.”
To Listen is to Serve
According to Kassi, Veterans often feel rushed through their medical appointments. The treatment itself matters, but she found that many Veterans also needed something beyond the clinical side of care.
They needed someone who would actually listen.
“A lot of people don’t want to listen to them. They just want to treat them and send them on. But I just love listening to their stories and forming that relationship with them.”
At the end of each day, those conversations were what stayed with her the most.
“I go away every day just feeling satisfied with the work I’ve done and just feeling really blessed that I have this job because it’s so rewarding.”
Listening to History Firsthand
It’s no wonder that one of the most memorable moments of Kassi’s career came while listening to a Veteran from a generation that is becoming increasingly rare.
The patient was in his late nineties, a World War II Veteran whose life story stretched back to one of the most defining conflicts in modern history.
Instead of rushing through the appointment, Kassi gave him time to talk.
He described his experiences during the war, sharing memories that few people today get to hear firsthand. For nearly an hour, Kassi listened as he reflected on his service, the people he served alongside, and the events that shaped his life.
“It was very cool to see things from that perspective during World War II,” she recalls. “You just don’t get to hear those stories very often.”
What stood out most was the pride he still carried decades after the war had ended. Despite the hardships and sacrifices, the Veteran spoke with deep respect for his service and the country he had defended.
“He said if he could, he would do it again,” Kassi remembers. “I just loved that. He had so much pride in our country.”
Moments like that reminded Kassi why she chose this career. They turned routine clinical visits into something much more meaningful, where history, gratitude, and service all came together.
The Right Support Makes the Work Possible
Kassi brought a lot to her patients, and a strong support system helped make that possible.
Healthcare professionals in Veteran care often face demanding schedules, changing policies, and complex patient needs. Having a reliable support system behind the scenes can make a big difference.
For Kassi, that support was consistent.
“I think Matrix Providers has been very supportive in my career and in my job,” she says. “They’re always there when I have questions, and they have a great support team.”
During particularly challenging periods, including the uncertainty brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, she found the organization responsive and dependable.
“They’ve been very helpful during COVID,” she explains. “I feel like I’m very respected by my peers, my managers, and anyone that I work with associated with Matrix Providers.”
Even the smaller things, like quick email responses and clear communication, reinforced that sense of collaboration.
“They’re always prompt to return my emails and respond to any questions I have,” she says.
