From Personal Loss to Veteran Care: A Nurse Practitioner’s Story

Not everyone who enters healthcare does it for the same reason. Some are drawn by a simple desire to help. Others by benefits and stability. And some carry something heavier, a moment that left a mark and never quite faded.

Christa Conologue, nurse practitioner (NP), is one of those people, and the veterans she served are better for it.

When Loss Becomes a Calling: How Christa’s Journey Began

Some people choose healthcare. For Christa Conologue, it chose her.

She grew up spending time in hospitals, watching doctors and nurses care for her father during his battle with cancer. Those years left a mark on her.

“I decided I wanted to enter medicine at a fairly young age after exposure to a lot of hospitals and doctors and nurses during my father’s battle with cancer,” she recalls.

The outcome was devastating. But Christa turned that pain into purpose.

“Unfortunately, he did not survive his battle with cancer. But it provided me with the motivation to want to help other families through their journey and to pursue education in healthcare.”

That motivation never left her. It followed her all the way to a career caring for the people who sacrificed the most.

Inside the Work of a Veteran Care Nurse Practitioner

Christa worked as a nurse practitioner in Tampa, Florida, conducting Medical Disability Examinations (MDEs) for veterans.

Her role sat at a critical intersection of healthcare and advocacy. She reviewed medical records, evaluated conditions, and helped determine whether a veteran’s illness was connected to their military service.

The veterans she saw carried histories that extended far beyond a chart. Many were older, living with conditions that developed years, sometimes decades, after their service ended. Her job was to make sure those conditions were properly documented and that the people who earned benefits could actually receive them.

For Christa, the reason to keep showing up was both personal and rooted in history.

Veterans and the Legacy of Agent Orange

Decades later, veterans continue to develop serious illnesses linked to Agent Orange exposure. Many spent years managing those conditions on their own, without knowing they were entitled to support.

This was the world Christa worked in every day. And one patient made that reality impossible to ignore.

“My most memorable experience is a Vietnam vet that was just so incredibly gracious to be getting care for Agent Orange,” she says.

That encounter did more than stay with her. It became the fuel behind her commitment to Vietnam-era veterans and the work she continued to do for them.

When a Tough Marine Broke Down

The veteran Christa remembered had been carrying his diagnosis for years. Like many Vietnam-era veterans, he had been paying for his own healthcare out of pocket, unaware that his condition could be officially connected to his military service.

Then he found out it could.

Through a benefit called service connection, a veteran’s illness can be found to have a “clear connection” to their time in uniform. ¹ Once approved, that connection opens the door to VA healthcare benefits and financial support. For this veteran, it meant he no longer had to bear the cost of his care alone.

When Christa helped him understand what was possible, the weight of that moment was immediate.

“He was a big rough and tough marine, and all of a sudden he’s crying in my office,” she said.

He had spent years fighting a battle most people never saw. Now, for the first time, real help was within reach.

“He learned that he could get some resources from the VA, came to me to get the service connection, and was beyond gracious that this process was going to provide him with the healthcare he desperately needed.”

This Is Why She Showed Up Every Day

That experience shifted something for Christa.

“Just seeing a grown man cry brings a different perspective to things,” she reflected.

The paperwork, the records, the hours of documentation. They stopped being routine after that. Each file became a person. Each case became a story.

“It makes me feel like it’s worth all the paperwork and all the reviewing of records, because I am putting a story with the work.”

And the story always came back to the same truth.

“I am seeing someone who fought for our country and my safety, and is now able to get the care they desperately deserve and need.”

The Support Behind the Mission

Work like Christa’s required more than determination. It required the right environment to do it well.

“I love working with Matrix Providers. They reach out to me and see how I’m doing. There’s work-life balance. I get some benefits, which are huge, obviously.”

When the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic closed offices and disrupted schedules, Matrix Providers opened a different door.

“I’ve had the opportunity to do some work even when the office was closed during COVID because I worked with Matrix Providers, so other opportunities opened up, which was really awesome.”
