Listening That Heals: A Nurse Practitioner’s Impact on Veterans

What’s a sure way to know someone feels truly heard? They take the time to tell you.

When a patient’s feedback travels all the way up the chain to leadership, it says something about the care behind it. At Matrix Providers, that kind of moment earns a Challenge Coin.

Nurse Practitioner (NP) Kelly Browning performed Compensation and Pension (C&P) exams for Veterans through Optum in Teays Valley, West Virginia. She received a Challenge Coin from Dr. Bill Rivard, then CEO of Matrix Providers, recognizing the impact of her work with the Veterans she served.

This is her story.

NP Kelly’s Purposeful Compensation and Pension Exam Work

A C&P exam is one of the most important appointments a Veteran can have. It is a formal medical evaluation conducted for Veterans seeking disability benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

During the exam, a healthcare provider reviews the Veteran’s medical history, assesses their current condition, and documents how service-related injuries or illnesses affect their daily life. The results directly influence whether a Veteran receives benefits and at what level. Every C&P exam follows the same underlying framework: a structured review of medical history and current condition, translated into documentation that carries real consequences for the Veteran on the other side of it.

These appointments carry real emotional weight, often asking a Veteran to put into words what they have carried since their time in service. NP Kelly was commended by her management for the consistently positive feedback she received from the Veterans she evaluated. She followed her heart to her professional calling, and that dedication showed up clearly in how her patients described their time with her.

The Letter That Reached Leadership

After one of her exams, a Veteran did something most patients never do. He wrote a letter thanking NP Kelly for the way she made him feel during his evaluation, specifically for helping him feel heard, cared for, and truly listened to.

The letter made its way up the chain until it reached Dr. Bill Rivard, then CEO of Matrix Providers.

“I recently had a Veteran, he wrote a letter to the company thanking them for my professionalism and just making them feel heard and cared for, listened to,” NP Kelly said.

A Veteran chose to take time out of his day to put those words on paper and see that they reached the people who could act on them. That says something about the kind of care NP Kelly delivered every day.

A Coin Reserved for a Special Kind of Care

The Challenge Coin is a tradition Matrix Providers adapted from the military, presented by the CEO in person, always with a handshake, to providers who have gone above and beyond.

“So, Kelly, as you might or might not know, the military has a tradition of a Challenge Coin for people who go above and beyond, and we hand them out to people who’ve done something exceptional or representative of the level of service that we’re really looking for here,” Dr. Bill Rivard told her at the presentation. “Thank you very much for everything that you’ve done for us.”

“Thank you,” NP Kelly said.

The tradition itself reflects something bigger than a single ceremony. Recognition delivered this way, in person, by leadership, with a handshake, tells a provider that their work was seen and that it mattered.

The Culture Behind the Care

NP Kelly’s story reflects the kind of culture Matrix Providers works to build for the clinicians it places. Providers who follow their heart to their calling, the way she did, are given the recognition that work deserves, not just from the patients they serve, but from the leadership behind them.

That recognition is part of what it means to work with Matrix Providers. Good work does not go unnoticed, and neither does the dedication it takes to consistently show up for the people who depend on it, whether that means a Veteran navigating a disability claim or an active-duty service member relying on continuity of care at a military treatment facility. For providers like NP Kelly, that kind of culture is part of what makes the work sustainable, and part of what makes Matrix Providers a place where clinicians choose to build their careers.
