A Physician’s Unshakable Commitment Earns a Challenge Coin

physicians-commitment-challenge-coin/

What does it take to earn a Challenge Coin? In the military, it takes going above and beyond what’s expected of you, the kind of moment where ordinary recognition just isn’t enough. Matrix Providers has adapted that same tradition, and field providers have earned a Challenge Coin for exceptional work.

That’s exactly what happened with Dr. Jim Adams, a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Physician who helped Veterans through one of the most important steps in their disability claims process. He’s a recipient of the Challenge Coin, and here’s how he earned it.

A Tradition That Carries Weight

Challenge Coins are traditionally large, decorated coins bearing the crest of a military unit, handed out by ranking military to people who have gone above and beyond. As Matrix Providers CEO Dr. Bill Rivard put it, the fact that a commander would take time out of his schedule to recognize someone in front of others carries real meaning. So does the handshake that comes with it. It’s more than a note or an email.

Matrix Providers adapted that same tradition. Coins are handed out by the CEO alone, always in person, and always with a handshake, reserved for the kind of above-and-beyond work that people do “that they don’t have to do at all, and that nobody would even know normally that they did.”

What a TBI Evaluation Really Means

Dr. Adams conducts Veteran disability evaluations, primarily for traumatic brain injury (TBI). These injuries don’t always show up immediately. Over time, they can affect memory and concentration, mood and emotional regulation, sleep and daily functioning, and sensitivity to light, sound, and stimulation.

For Veterans carrying these effects, getting evaluated is often one of the first steps in their disability claims process. It’s careful work, and it depends on Veterans actually being able to get in the door for their appointment.

Opening Doors On Days They Wouldn’t

On one morning, Dr. Adams arrived at his clinic to find it locked. For busy physicians, this is an unfortunate circumstance, the kind that gives most people a reasonable excuse to reschedule.

He’d been given the code to retrieve the office key, but when he unlocked the front door, it still wouldn’t open. A magnetic lock required a separate swipe he didn’t have access to.

Standing outside with the Veteran, trying to figure out a plan, Dr. Adams realized he could use his phone as a hotspot. He brought out his all-in-one computer, and the two of them sat down on the front porch, where he pulled up the Veteran’s Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ) and completed the evaluation right there.

It was raining that day, so they sat under the porch’s cover. The Veteran and his wife had driven a long way for the appointment, and Dr. Adams wasn’t willing to send them home and make them reschedule.

A Good Visit, A New Friend

The practical outcome was clear. Dr. Adams had finished the evaluation the Veteran had traveled for.

But something else happened on that porch. In his own words, Dr. Adams said, “We had a good conversation, we connected… we just had a good visit. So not only did I get the evaluation done, I think I made a new friend.”

A Coin Reserved for the Extraordinary

When Dr. Bill Rivard presented Dr. Adams with his Challenge Coin, he explained exactly why: “We’re here today because of your example of extraordinary service, and even in the smallest possible way, by keeping your clinic open and available despite some logistical difficulties. It’s not that big a thing, but we know that commitment to service is really what we’re all here for.”

Dr. Adams accepted it with the same quiet dedication that defined his work: “You are most welcome. My pleasure. It’s a great honor.”

Reflecting on the moment afterward, he added that the recognition meant something deeper than the coin itself: “It’s touching in that Matrix Providers recognizes my work with Veterans, which is just something that I do.”
